"National Life Insurance Day each year on May 2nd marks the anniversary of the first day that life insurance became available in the United States. The observance also brings awareness of the benefits of life insurance. The sale of life insurance in the U.S. began in the late 1760s. The Presbyterian Synods in Philadelphia and New York City created the Corporation for Relief of Poor and Distressed Widows and Children of Presbyterian Ministers in 1759. On May 2, 1759, the charter recorded for the Corporation for Relief of Poor and Distressed Widows and Children of Presbyterian Ministers. Episcopalian priests created a comparable relief fund in 1769. Between 1787 and 1837, more than two dozen life insurance companies were started, but fewer than half a dozen survived. Life insurance can do some pretty amazing things for people. It can buy loved oneβs time to grieve. It can also pay off debts and loans, providing surviving family members with the chance to move on with a clean slate. Life insurance allows families to remain in their homes and pre-fund a childβs college education. When families own a business, life insurance will enable them to keep the business in the event of an untimely death. It also provides a stream of income for a family to live on for a period of time."
My notes: Wow! I didn't know it was over 250 years ago when it first started!

Yeah, I would never have thought that any kind of insurance would have been available before the 1900s let alone in the 1700s! Wow.

"On May 2nd, National Truffle Day serves up a deliciously sweet treat and places the chocolate truffle in the spotlight. Traditionally, chocolatiers make this sweet confection with a chocolate ganache center coated in chocolate, icing, cocoa powder, chopped nuts, or coconut. They may fill the truffle with other yummy surprises. For example, some candy makers include cream, melted chocolate, caramel, nuts, fruit, nougat, fudge, toffee, mint, marshmallow, or liqueur. N. Petruccelli of Chambery, France is believed to be the inventor of the chocolate truffle in December 1895. Truffles became much more prevalent in 1902 when the Prestat Chocolate Shop opened in London. Prestat still sells βNapoleon IIIβ truffles made to the original recipe."
My notes: It's weird 'cos the word truffle can be a chocolate confection or a mushroom! I don't care for the former & haven't tried the latter. What about you?

As a mushroom or a chocolate treat, I didn't care for the taste of either one.

"World Tuna Day is an annual celebration on May 2 that highlights the importance of managing fish stocks to maintain sustainability. By using World Tuna Day, we hope to encourage proper management so the world has systems in place to prevent tuna stocks from crashing. More than 96 countries around the world participate in the conservation and management of tuna. In some parts of the world, over-fishing of some species, such as the southern bluefin tuna, has brought the species near-extinction."
My notes: If you do eat meat & seafood, be sure it's sustainable. If humans don't rein in their greed, more animals will become extinct. & if one becomes extinct, it will affect the entire Earth.

"International Scurvy Awareness Day is observed on May 2. You might be wondering why the world still needs to worry about scurvy. The truth is that the disease is still prevalent in the world due to widespread malnutrition and starvation in many countries as well as the surprising number of individuals who undergo highly selective diets that exclude foods such as fruits and vegetables. The day is also observed to pay respects to the people who endured it in the past. Their magnificent endurance shaped the world that we know today. Naturally, we cannot forget those who still endure such suffering even now."
My notes: I had wondered too. I thought scurvy was a thing of the past but actually many diseases & illnesses aren't. Some people don't have enough food & even if they do, it's not good nor have adequate nutrition for sustaining our bodies.

I've never thought about it still be a problem either. Trivia note: scurvy is caused by a Vitamin C deficiency. Sailors were given a ration of lime juice to prevent it.

The Brit-ish started doing that and that's how they got the nickname 'limeys'.

Yeah, I thought it was a thing of the past too - until I heard that guinea pigs often get it!
Fortunately, none of ours ever did - at least, not to my knowledge.
