I do most of my own vehicle maintenance - my father was a mechanic and often has advice for me. That's good to know! My dad & his brother are self-taught mechanics & were the ones who fixed all the cars. They taught my husband several things as well. Only problem is, with the new computer technology in cars, it's over their head. But they do refer us to someone who is very trustworthy when none of them can figure it out.

It's really hard to tell if mechanics are being honest with you, especially if you're like me and know nothing about cars...

Good tips for sure there and some garages do indeed rip people off.

It helps to deal with a well known mechanic or get your car fixed at a professional car shop. Getting ripped off by a mechanic has to be rare unless you are paying a friend or someone on the side of the road. But over pricing, if that's what you mean by getting ripped off, which I assume you do, this happens every single day. They tell you that more is wrong with your car then really is and then charge you more.

They're all good tips. Having a basic knowledge of mechanics and knowing your mechanic are very important.

I can't blame auto mechanics for looking for things to fix. A car needs to be in total shape to run. Nonetheless, a car "can" run without everything fixed and many people don't have the finances to really fix the vehicle at the moment. Myself, I would look for a balance in these things when speaking to a mechanic and also look at reviews and make sure I'm somewhat knowledgeable about automobiles.
