2018 I emailed them asking questions ‘cos they do "UPC for trees & recycling" but… do antibiotics. SMH! I had gone thru my Word Files & found out I did email them in 2016 too lol But even that 2 years window, they told me the same thing. They were very wordy in "promoting" their recycling efforts, partnering w/ TerraCycle. To me, it diverts people's attention to the REAL issue. Gee, I make my bags recyclable, pat me on the head… I FIRMLY stand by: If you aren't part of the solution you are part of the problem.
I emailed: “I would like to know if your meat is antibiotic, hormone free, not factory farmed? If the ingredients are non-GMO? Being labeled “holistic” & environmentally friendly, I did not see anything on your site on your stance Re: conventional meat & GMOs.”
Their response: “Thank you for your interest in Earthborn Holistic® Food for Pets. Earthborn Holistic® dry pet food is manufactured in our company owned manufacturing facilities in Monmouth, Illinois, Waverly, New York, Chickasha, Oklahoma, and Evansville, IN. Midwestern Pet Foods was founded in 1926. A family owned business, now in it’s 4th generation, Midwestern Pet Foods owns and operates four state-of-the-art pet food production facilities in the Midwest. We are proud of the fact that we manufacture all of our own dry pet food and do not specialty co-pack for any companies. Earthborn Holistic® is made of all natural ingredients which means that instead of a by-product it contains real chicken meal. Also included are whole grains, balanced omega 6 and 3 fatty acids, probiotics, digestive enzymes, antioxidant vitamins and chelated minerals. So Earthborn Holistic® Natural Food for Pets is a wholesome food which helps maintain your dog’s overall health and total physical well-being, supporting all body functions.
We do not claim that our protein sources are hormone or antibiotic free. Our chickens are not free range. Our chicken meal comes from a human grade facility where “people food” is processed.
The main ingredients of concern for GMO are corn and soy. Since our Earthborn products do not contain corn or soy, generally speaking there are little GMO issues with this product line. We don’t make the claim that our products are GMO free because we do not grow our own ingredients and cannot fully control the process. Cross contamination exists on farms, at elevators, etc. and to say that traces of it do not exist could be misleading. Our new Earthborn Holistic Venture formulas are GMO-Free.”
So I wrote back: “Thank you for your reply. However, I didn’t ask for your history. To me, that was just a filler. You don’t claim to be hormone, antibiotic, GMO free, but see, you DO. In your NAME- EARTH. BORN. HOLISTIC. Your name is not LAB. BORN. CONVENTIONAL.
& you can’t fully control the process of where you source your ingredients? Come on! If we were buying products from someone & they weren’t up to our par, we just would go elsewhere. Simple.
Organic companies have no problem with that issue. There are factories that create food in a controlled environment so hence no ‘cross- contamination’. They do it for gluten free all the time.
There are ALWAYS options IF a company really wants to. “Natural” pet foods are expensive & it’s annoying we’re paying premium prices for GMOs & in a sense, junk.
I appreciate your response & seems your stance on GMOs (same w/ antibiotics/ hormones) is that they are “ok”. If it’s grown in a lab (aka GMOs), it’s not ‘natural’, ‘healthy’, nor is it ‘food’.
At least you were honest but your answers were the same ol’ cop outs I’ve come across with other companies that jumped on the proverbial “Eco” bandwagon & greenwashed.”
Oooh contains “real” chicken meal. Uh, chicken meal is rendered & not good either. Meat meal is better than byproduct but it’s still not good.
They are holistic & ‘eco’ but don’t ‘claim’ sources are hormone or antibiotic free. Uh, HOLISTIC IS THE CLAIM!! It’s right in your name! Oooh chicken meal is processed where people food is processed. As if that is appeasing me.
Can’t control where your sources come from? Yes You Can! “Hey, ABC Company, we do not want your stuff if it doesn’t comply with our quality control.” See, simple.
I’m so pissed at these stinking companies. They are expensive for CRAP!
If you go to this site, you would think, Gee, this is a GOOD product. I've seen them at fairs promoting too. I had printed the emails out so if I saw them at fairs, I could have proof.
No, they didn’t blatantly lie, but they REALLY skirted around the topic with fillers.
Have they changed? It could happen. So if I was ready to try their product, I'd first email again. But just goes to show people, Always Ask Questions! If they try to divert your attention, they are hiding something & go somewhere else.
