When working on small or mid size projects to store a bit of information what do you prefer to use, such as ones like a database (mysql, postgresql, mssql) or do you start with spreadsheets, access or just plain text document.
myself if only handling a small amount of data i make my own window or linux application that store into a light database (SQLite) then use code to automate or handle the data i am working with.

I've only ever used mysql for my online hosting needs related for my websites. For personal projects for local use I just use either spreadsheets or plain text document, the most advancing I've gone is using notepad++
Excel spreadsheets can be rather detailed in keeping information organized, really helpful when storing lots of names and numbers.

Currently I had two hosting accounts that are handling everything what I need and mysql is is the best option for me. Ive even use Google spreadsheets for customer projects so that can view from their end even on daily basis.
Online data storage is good, but always store offline also, if lost then youre gone for the hard work.

I start with spreadsheets. That gives me a bit of control especially when there are some calculations that need to be done as well. You can never say never when it comes to storing information.
