www.familyhandyman.com/article/what-the-color-of-your-garden-soil-means "Some soil colors are gardening gold, while others are a bust. Here's what your soil color means for gardening success, and how to fix it if it's off. Imagine the dusty red dirt of the Utah desert, the dark spongy soils of the Cascades’ old-growth forests, or a gray sandy path through some lanky Florida pines. A glance at any of these soils can help you figure out what might grow there. In your garden, the color of your soil can also be a clue to what you can grow successfully, or what you’ll need to add to make your soil more viable...." My notes: What color do you have? We have sandy soil & it's a light brown.

Our yard is light brown clay and therefore our gardens are raised beds with nice dark brown potting soil. Sadly plants don't enjoy when we place them in the clay cement that is our yard.

It should be a nice shade of dark brown color to it, my Grandma's garden has awesome ground, though it took her years to make it happen. When she no longer gardens I'm going to take a lot of the ground for my own use.

It is same as real soil, but most of the soil in pots were red soil because plants grow better in red soil. I also add black compost in this soil for better nutrients and thus the soil color changes into light brown.
If no compost added, then the red soil remain as red only, but it dries soon as it can't hold much water in pots.
