healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2022/07/13/how-to-pick-up-dog.aspxStory at-a-glance No matter your dog’s size, it’s important to pick him up the right way, which is something many well-meaning dog parents get wrong Parts of the body that should never be used to lift a dog: legs, scruff of the neck, collar, tail If your dog is very small, teaching a verbal “lift-off” cue will help her prepare to be picked up, which will lessen her anxiety Ideally, large dogs should be lifted by a two-person team When lifting a dog with a back problem, it’s important to always keep the back completely level My notes: Be sure you learn the correct way for them & for you.

Oh yeah, don't want to hurt them.

I always make sure to lift them from under their belly and to cradle them against my chest, resting their weight on me and when they begin to show distress, I set them down on a soft surface, letting their paws touch it first before lowering them all the way.

I used to put my hand under little puppy belly to pick it up as it is the right place to hold the weight. I have seen some of them hold the front legs to pick up this puppies, but they feel uncomfortable while carrying like this. Most doesn't know these things and the puppies don't have voice to tell or they won't cry while picking in wrong positions.
