healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2022/07/07/vaquita-extinction.aspxStory at-a-glance Sadly, the wonderful little vaquita porpoise, the world’s smallest marine mammal, is down to a population of 10 or fewer The biggest threat by far to vaquitas is the illegal practice of gillnet fishing; the little porpoises become entangled in the nets and death comes quickly Despite their historically small population and relatively tiny range, vaquitas don’t suffer as a species from inbreeding, so their recovery is possible with the immediate enforcement of laws against the use of gillnets There is no species similar to the vaquita anywhere in the world; it’s loss would mean the loss of an important predator adapted to a unique ecosystem My notes: I hope they do bounce back. & I wish more laws would be enforced with gillnets. They capture all sorts of creatures. USA enforces it more readily but Mexico needs to do their job as well.
