There is this school of thought that claims that what makes a marriage a successful one is the ability of both partners staying together before getting married for some months in order to understand each other. Do you agree that this is necessary or overreaching?

I don't know if it is necessary or overreaching but if it works for you, go for it.

I do believe that cohabitation is necessary before marriage, that's just my opinion. I don't think it dictates if a marriage will be successful or not per se, but I definitely would want to live with someone I'm considering to spend the rest of my life with. Living with someone will expose you to much more detail and their way of living, something that can be suppressed or hidden out in public

We you can visit me for as long as you want, stay the weekend sometimes but you're never going to live with me till we have been married. This is a good decision to ensure that one doesn't get too relaxed when visiting. Setting this kind of boundaries is helpful especially when you are not too sure of getting married to your partner.
