I tend to use lightning bugs more but I have called them fireflies. We have some here. Too bad they are diminishing rapidly, due of course to humans.

Lightening bugs. I don't see as many as there use to be.

I've called them both, and they're fun to watch

I've used both terms back when I spent summers capturing them in bottles and netted cages, though I always let them go at the end of the night. It was a rather fun activity to do and still neat to watch others do it.

Lightning bugs. Used to catch them when we were younger.

I've used both interchangeably. It really depends on age I think. When you're younger, it sounds cooler to say I'm going to go catch or collect lightning bugs than fireflies.

earthsky.org/earth/fireflies-light-up-why-how"Whether you call them lightning bugs or fireflies, these beetles are a sign of summer. Indeed, you’re most likely to see them in warm weather, when rainfall has been plentiful. Many a child has spent a summer evening chasing them. And, with this in mind, maybe you’ve wondered: Why do fireflies light up? And how do they do it?..." My notes: Some interesting facts. stluee, lainee, demonskeith, mitchy71, Bob, Prometheus,

Did anyone ever do anything other than try to catch them?

Both, but lightning bugs is by far the most popular term around here.

As a kid, I've chased them for fun, and, actually caught a few in my cupped hands. Of course, that didn't last long.

As a kid, I've chased them for fun, and, actually caught a few in my cupped hands. Of course, that didn't last long. Never tried to catch them in my bare hands. My brothers and I use to take plastic bats and swing at them. Can't say it doesn't seem wrong now that I'm older but we were kids.
