healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2020/09/06/factors-that-influence-dog-obesity.aspx "The 4 Most Important Factors That Influence Dog Obesity" Story at-a-glance A study published early this year is unique in that it was conducted by a fresh pet food company, and among other things, evaluates diet composition as a factor in overweightness and obesity in dogs From a wide range of factors affecting dogs’ body condition scores, four in particular stood out in the study: diet, exercise, probiotic supplementation, and treat quantity The study results indicate that a diet of fresh food, probiotic supplementation, and feeding treats at or under 10% of total daily calories are significant factors in helping dogs maintain an ideal weight My notes: Another cause is humans. Overfeeding, lack of exercise. The same thing a human does to their own body, they do for their pet.

healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2020/10/14/dog-treats-as-hygge-candy.aspx Story at-a-glance Overweight or obese dogs are twice as likely to have an owner who’s overweight or obese as well, according to researchers at the University of Copenhagen Researchers suggested that overweight owners were more likely to use dog treats as hygge-candy, referring to the Danish word “hygge,” which means cozy In one 2017 study, 78% of overweight/obese owners had overweight/obese dogs, including all dogs in the study diagnosed with obesity-related metabolic dysfunction Diet composition — specifically the consumption of dry food — is linked to increased obesity risks; so one of the most impactful changes you can make is to swap out dry food for a fresh food diet My notes: Just like with humans, treats should be just that- a treat. Not a meal replacement.

www.goodhealthlifestylesmagazine.com/the-skinny-on-pet-obesity"I know it can be hard to keep from slipping your furry friend a treat whenever he or she looks up at you with those eyes. But thanks those frequent, 56 percent of all dogs in America are, to put it simply, fat. In fact, the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention notes that veterinarians in the U. S. now classify more than 100 million pets as overweight or obese—up from 80 million just five years ago. The good news is that it’s never too late to get your pup on a diet that supports healthy weight loss...." My notes: Unless the animal has a physical condition, there is NO excuse for them to be obese.

healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2022/03/08/overweight-cat-symptoms.aspx Story at-a-glance In the U.S. 59.5% of pet cats are overweight or obese, putting them at risk of diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, kidney disease and other weight-related disorders Veterinarians often use body condition scoring (BCS) when they conduct your cat’s annual exam; once you know what your cat’s healthy weight should be, it’s important to keep track of it A simple way to weigh your cat at home is to pick up your cat and step on the scale. Note your combined weight. Then weigh yourself without your cat. Your cat’s weight is the difference between the two The consumption of dry food is significantly associated with overweight/obesity, both alone and in combination with canned or fresh food To help your cat lose weight gradually, you’ll want to add as many species-appropriate fresh foods to your pet’s diet as possible, while avoiding ultraprocessed carbs and increasing activity My notes: While it's easier I believe to help an overweight dog by taking them for more walks, cats are a bit harder. Anybody have any tips on what has helped their cat lose some weight?

There's no reason pets should be overweight unless they have a medical condition. Humans need to get off their lazy asses and walk their dog!

naturesplus.com/blogs/pet-care/keeping-your-pet-at-a-healthy-weight "Want your pets to live long, healthy lives? Keep them at an appropriate weight. We’ve all seen the images as we scroll through our feeds: chubby dogs and roly-poly cats, looking just as cute as can be. But there’s nothing cute about the risk that extra weight represents in terms of potential poor health. “Did you realize a 12-pound Yorkie is the same as an average female weighing 218 pounds and a 14-pound cat is equivalent to a 237-pound man?” asks Ernie Ward, DVM, CVFT, of the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention (APOP)...." My notes: Another great article on the importance of keeping our pets at a healthy weight.

The amount of overweight pets is appalling. Two reasons I think causes it - not getting enough exercise and owners over feeding them with food and giving them too many treats.

Our dog was overweight because my husband fed her table scraps. We had agreed when we first got her that we would never do it, but he went and did it. It was hard to get her weight down and the vet thought that maybe she had Cushings which causes a pot belly. We didn't want to test her for that because the treatment was really expensive and she didn't seem to have any bad effects from it if she did have it.

Not to mention a lot of kibble is high in carbs which can cause weight gain, just like in humans. What should be the ideal weight for a year old beagle? Beagles can be anywhere from 15 to 30 pounds.
