www.familyhandyman.com/list/solar-oven"Solar ovens are not just for emergencies and power outages. They are the perfect camping companion, a necessity on the boat and a fun way to cook at the RV camp. Plus, sunshine is free!..." My notes: Would you use a solar oven? Have you? What did you think about it? I haven't but am very open to cooking on one.

I've never used one, either....but sounds like it'd be handy in some situations.

My daughter made one in Girl Scouts and I was afraid to really cook anything like meat inside of it. I can't remember what I let her "cook", but I'm sure it was something that I wouldn't have to worry about getting food poisoning. LOL

These are really easy to make. You can take aluminum foil and shape it into a U or a parabula. In a sunny day, the parbula will focus the rays of sunlight and if covered with a clear cover (like saran wrap maybe), the heat will not only be concentrated but also trapped, creating an oven effect by warming the air molecules. Another way of cooking is an underground oven. You make a fire and put large stones in and around the fire. These stones will heat up. While that's occurring, you take what you want to cook, make it small and flat, and wrap it in leaves/grass, dig a pit. place the hot rocks in the pit, place the wrapped food on the stones, place more stones around and over the food, then bury. Allow to cook all day. If dug into clay, this will help radiate the heat in the pit. Covering the food traps the heat so it's not lost as quickly as it would be in open air. (I actually learned this from reading the Earth's Children series by Jean M. Auel.

Bob, lainee, lammchen, Senkusha, Thank you for all the replies here! I heard of underground cooking on nature shows i.e. for Hawaii & other cultures.
