Thoughts on dishwashing machines? My wife and I will debate whether dishwashers save more water than hand washing or not. I am on the side of the dishwasher using less water than doing it by hand. Of course that doesn’t factor in electricity but from a water conservation standpoint I believe they are more efficient. What are your thoughts?

I love my dishwasher and hate doing dishes by hand. I trust that the dishwasher gets my stuff cleaner and we have a sanitize button that I actually used when we had some flood waters get to things that were in the basement.

I don't have a dishwasher, nor do I want one. I'm fine washing my dishes by hand

calamity, lammchen, lainee, Galra Keith, I found this article others may like to give an opinion: Disherwasher vs Hand WashingHonestly however, I am for handwashing. If you don't fill the sink & be frugal in not keeping the water running, it can be a good alternative. I don't need to waste electricity running another machine. The "Hand-Washing Best Practices" they list, I believe is not as eco as they fill & refill the sink. We get to our dishes right away so soaking is not needed. I also don't use sponges. Having to microwave them is another waste. I use rags cut in half. Every couple of days, throw in the laundry. Being cut in half, they are still big enough to get the job done. I also use Kirk's Castile bar soap to lather up. Used for doing dishes, hair, washing hands. This is a debate that has raged on. I am Team Handwashing

*I* am the dishwasher in my home. I prefer it that way. For some reason, washing the dishes is a form of stress relief for me and I find it quite relaxing. Maybe it's the hot water, maybe it's the suds, or the "clean" smell. Maybe it's just knowing that I accomplished something and feel productive? Does it save water doing it by hand? I guess that's how you do it.
I have a large bowl that I'm usually washing. So I'll wash that out (usually I'm baking with it), and I'll use that as a basin for my soapy water. I don't need to fill this bowl all the way up (It's huge). Then I'll flip on the water to rinse after I've scrubbed all my dishes clean. I would probably say I maybe use five gallons of water, if I had to guess.

I'm an introvert so I've been known to spend time in the kitchen at events to "help out". You can wash dishes & not have to interact too much lol

My wife and I are the only dishwashers. Don't need a machine nor do we have the extra room.

My wife and I are the only dishwashers. Don't need a machine nor do we have the extra room. Plus, they recommend a full, but not too full, dishwasher. I like getting them done as we go along. We only have a small amount of tableware so we can't wait for them to be washed.

I do the same. I'm usually washing my dishes in stages. First all the Prep cookware. Then all the cookware (while the meal is "resting"). Finally, the dishes we eat off from. Takes all but 15 minutes in five minute spurts!
