"Each year on January 29th, National Puzzle Day recognizes how exercising our brains with puzzles is just one of its many benefits. Whether it’s a crossword, jigsaw, trivia, word searches, brain teasers or Sudoku, puzzles put our minds to work. Studies have found that when we work on a jigsaw puzzle, we use both sides of the brain. And spending time daily working on puzzles improves memory, cognitive function, and problem-solving skills. Word searches and crossword puzzles have the obvious benefit of increasing vocabulary and language skills. Sudoku, a puzzle sequencing a set of numbers on a grid, exercises the brain as well. By testing memory and logical thinking, this puzzle stimulates the brain and can improve number skills. Puzzles also offer social benefits. When we work on these brain teasers with someone, we improve our social interactions. Whether we join a group or play with our children, those interactions keep us socially active and teach our children social skills, too. Even working them quietly together provides an opportunity to focus the mind in a meditative way that isn’t forced. The bottom line is, puzzles stimulate the brain, keeping it active, and practicing its skills." My notes: Who loves doing puzzles? While I don't care for crosswords, I do get the Penny Press Variety Puzzles & Word Seeks. Just got two more books yesterday! lol For those who'd like to have a discussion, can go to Puzzles, crosswords

I have always loved doing crossword puzzles. Ones that aren't too easy but not super hard either. Ones that challenge me to think outside the box. The L.A. Times Sunday crossword is my favorite. I buy compilations of old Sunday L.A. times crossword puzzles.

"National Seed Swap Day on the last Saturday in January serves as a reminder to gardeners that spring is on its way. It is also an ideal time for gardeners to gather and swap seeds in preparation for starting seeds indoors. The seed swap is a fundamental part of human history. Seeds were one of the first commodities valued and traded. Today, modern gardeners collect and exchange seeds for many reasons ranging from cultivating rare, heirloom varieties to basic thrift. The exchange of seeds perpetuates biodiversity, too. It is an act of giving and the ultimate form of recycling."
My notes: While I'm not part of a large Exchange Group, I have swapped seeds with friends before. It's a good way to share the bounty without having to pay extra.

"On January 29th, grab the queso or salsa and celebrate National Corn Chip Day. Recognized each year across the country, the day encourages corn chip lovers to whip up their favorite dips and toppings. The corn chip or friotes are not to be confused with the tortilla chip. Both are made from cornmeal which is baked or fried in oil. Differing steps for processing the corn separate the tortilla from the corn chip. The corn for a tortilla chip is soaked in a lime-water solution that breaks down the hulls. This process creates a crisper, milder chip. A corn chip is sturdier with a stronger corn flavor. Both were popular snacks originating in Mexico."
My notes: Who likes corn chips? I prefer regular tortilla chips.

Tortilla chips are good for dipping in salsa but break easily when dipping in guacamole.

Tortilla chips are good for dipping in salsa but break easily when dipping in guacamole. That's why I just crunch them up & put them in a bowl. Mix it up & eat with a spoon.

"Kansas Day is celebrated every January 29 and is in commemoration of the admission of Kansas State as the 34th member of the United States in 1861. The state of Kansas is well-endowed with great resources that make her stand out. The first Kansas Day was celebrated on January 29, 1877, and one of the ways the citizens observe this day is by telling the history of the land to younger folks or taking schoolchildren to the Capitol in Topeka to relish the beauty of the State. Kansas Day is exclusively celebrated in Kansas State in the U.S."
My notes: Who lives in KS? What do you like best? Dislike? They are notorious for having tornadoes. I honestly wouldn't want to live in that area. If you live there, how do you deal with the weather?
"Are tornadoes common in Kansas? According to a study by Policygenius, Kansas experienced an average of 86 tornadoes per year from 1997 to 2022. Last year the state saw 66, according to the same report. April through June is considered “tornado season” in Kansas, but severe weather can happen at any time."
