healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2021/03/05/salmonella-hedgehogs.aspx Story at-a-glance In Canada, 31 people became ill — including four who were hospitalized — between June 2017 and October 2020 after having direct or indirect contact with a pet hedgehog As of January 2021, 49 Americans were infected with salmonella typhimurium, and contact with pet hedgehogs was believed to be the source of the outbreak Hedgehogs can carry salmonella in their poop, which can easily be spread to their body, habitat and any other surfaces they touch It’s important to wash your hands thoroughly after handling a hedgehog or touching its habitat, including during cleaning; they also shouldn’t roam in your kitchen or other areas where food is kept or eaten If you’re considering a hedgehog for a pet, avoid purchasing one via the exotic pet trade, which may capture animals from the wild, and adopt a domesticated hedgehog from a rescue organization instead My notes: I cannot imagine having a hedgehog. Anybody here have one as a pet?

My daughter's best friend had a hedgehog and the thing never liked her even though she loved it. It only lived a couple years and she found out later that the lifespan isn't as long as the pet store indicated so she was really upset. I'm not sure she would ever get another hedgehog for that reason. She never even considered the salmonella side of things.
