Either a whole-home or a portable one? We have a portable one but we are getting a whole-home. We lose power more here than our last house & it’s worth the investment.

No, I live in an apartment and have never used a generator. I might consider getting one when I move into a place of my own though.

Yeah, it would be worth the investment as the OP said. Well, a person really doesn't know what disaster will strike. However, though, the last truly terrible snowstorm that actually took out power happened in the 90s near my home (in Northeast Tennessee). The situation here is that the roads get bad, but the power stays on. Actually, a winter problem that seems way worse is pipes freezing up and busting.

We don't have a generator, we have installed solar panels that provide us with electricity back up during the power outge.

I just got a generator last month because of light issues that I experienced at home. Since I did, it has helped me stayed available always for clients that need my services.

I don't have any use for a generator. This is because I have solar panels installed in my home and it serves me better than having a generator.

I live in an apartment so right now, no. Once we get a house we will get one though.

I do not. I should probably invest in one though, since I'm a hurricane area.

I don't have any use for a generator. This is because I have solar panels installed in my home and it serves me better than having a generator. Solar panels are good especially when you have the ability to maintain them. I prefer generator because the cost of petrol is a bit fair where I live.

No, it is extremely rare that we ever lose power in our area to warrant the need for one. Plus, I hear generators are expensive to get, keep gassed up and maintain. Not to mention kind of dangerous if the carbon it emits gets into the house.

Portable generators are not that costly, depending on the make & model, but DO need to be gassed up. I never liked doing that so my husband had to be here when we lost power. We kept it far away from the house & used an extension cord. Another reason I liked my husband being here with me. To be sure it wasn't overloaded. We focused mostly on keeping the fridge plugged in.
Now a whole-home generator like Generac, we got one installed last summer. It kicks on within 30 seconds of an outage. The only bad thing is we lose computer & phone until the modem resets but with the exception of being able to hear the Generac on, it's like we never even lost power. Then when the power returns, you hear different clicks & the Generac turns itself off.
If you don't lose power, I can see not wanting the added expense. But if you live in an area with power outages, the peace of mind is wonderful!

I don't have a generator, but planning to install solar panels for free energy. I had small DC fan and portable emergency lights that can provide lights when the power is off. Here the petrol and diesel price is high so this is also another reason for us.
It's nice you people all are having a Portable generator in your homes.

With what's going on in the economy right now, the price of both petrol and gas is very expensive. It's making a lot of people face serious challenges with everything they need petrol and gas for. It's why you get to see that I'm on the advantage side with the use of my solar panels.

I noticed that while studying generators today. I'm assuming the lower number is the one I need to use as the true kw.

I noticed that while studying generators today. I'm assuming the lower number is the one I need to use as the true kw. For us, we wanted a whole-home generator to power the entire house when we are in an outage. So we went with the higher KW. Some people just want to power a few items to get by so they wouldn't need a high KW. Also depends on how much you want to pay.

How much KW do you have? Powered by diesel?

How much KW do you have? Powered by diesel? We bought the 18kw. Powered by propane. Propane is also our heating here so they just hooked up the line.

I see. How long can it hold your electricity needs?

I see. How long can it hold your electricity needs? For us, it would be until the power comes back on or we run out of propane. For those who have a Natural Gas hookup, it can run indefinitely. However, it uses up more gas than one would use normally.

Do you stock enough Propane so that the generator can run for a whole night / 24 hrs?

Do you stock enough Propane so that the generator can run for a whole night / 24 hrs? Our tank holds I believe 500 gallons. Going to Generac's website, a full tank would last 1 week. Unlike using propane for general heating & electricity, a Generac generator has to run continuously so would use up way more propane. It would definitely get expensive if a blackout were to occur for a long period of time but for a day or two, it's worth the peace of mind. We decided to get one when we had no power in an Arctic Blast.

Interesting. Never knew that it is this hard with infrastructure to be in a rural area.
