healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2021/09/09/why-adopt-older-pets.aspx Story at-a-glance Older dogs and cats in shelters are often the last to find homes, and the first to be euthanized There are many reasons older pets are relinquished to shelters; there are also many reasons prospective adopters tend to steer clear of them If you’re planning to add a new dog or cat to the family, I hope you’ll consider the many wonderful benefits of adopting a senior pet Fortunately, as pets enter their golden years, there is much we can do to optimize their health, happiness, and quality of life Caring for older pets’ oral health, feeding a fresh food diet that includes high-quality protein, and insuring they get regular physical and mental stimulation are just some of the ways we can help our aging animal companions thrive in their senior years My notes: As much as I'd love to help them, I cannot bring myself to adopt too old of a pet. The time is so limited as it is & I bond strongly with my furbabies!

Losing a pet after 15 years is hard so losing one after a couple of years, is just as hard.

I imagine this is something I will when I get older and well into retirement after I've gotten my fill of traveling, projects, etc.
I love the idea of helping these animals be comfortable for the rest of their days. If I can make them feel loved even for a short while I think that will be worth it. I will only do this though when I can truly dedicate time for their care.
