healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2021/09/27/how-to-comfort-storm-phobic-pet.aspx Story at-a-glance If your dog becomes anxious or fearful during thunderstorms, fireworks or other loud noises, he may have a noise phobia Some dogs become anxious or panicked not only due to the noise of a storm but due to the flashes of lightning, rain, wind, odors or changes in barometric pressure; this could indicate a storm phobia Storm phobias tend to get worse over time instead of better; for this reason, the earlier you start treatment to help your pet cope, the better Create a safe spot for your pet to retreat to when they’re feeling anxious about an approaching storm; the spot should be in an interior room away from windows Some cases may require the help of a fear-free trainer or behaviorist to overcome a thunderstorm phobia, however a number of natural remedies, nutraceuticals and herbs can be beneficial My notes: A tip I learned from Cesar Millan, don’t make a big deal out of it & it won’t be. Dogs can sense their humans nervousness. Wild creatures, no pun intended, weather storms ‘cos that is what they have to do. They don’t have a human freaking out or babying them.

My cat and dogs used to watch a lot of discovery channel shows and lightning strikes and the thunderstorm sounds became common for them so the actual exposure didn't affected them much.

Just have to act like it’s not a big deal, like nothing’s going on.

My dog loves to come and cower at my feet during fireworks, but she's absolutely fine during thunderstorms. She doesn't like to go out in the rain and get wet, but she doesn't mind the crash of thunder in the least.

I let my big German shepherd inside the entrance room where he chills out. He hates fireworks too, so every time that happens he runs around frantically and tries to enter the house. So I just let him inside to calm him and pet him.
