healthypets.mercola.com/sites/healthypets/archive/2021/10/14/wild-goldfish.aspx Story at-a-glance Cities across the U.S. are struggling with goldfish that have been dumped into lakes by their owners In the wild, goldfish quickly “turn from pet to pest” and may wreak havoc on water quality and outcompete other species for resources Goldfish, known scientifically as Carassius auratus, are a surprisingly hearty species, capable of living for 25 years or more and surviving harsh winter conditions As they feed, they can uproot plants and disturb sediment, altering water quality and causing algal blooms In Carver County, Minnesota, up to 50,000 goldfish were removed from the Grace Chain of Lakes on one day in October 2020, and officials are still trying to figure out how to get the goldfish population under control and restore the lake’s ecology and native fish population My notes: I really wish people wouldn't do this! Fish are creatures too & while they may not have a human's emotion, they still are living & breathing & shouldn't be a throw-away pet. Worse, they shouldn't be a "prize" at fairs.

ZandraJoi, You get goldfish for pets, not to dump in lakes...that's crazy & irresponsible! And, I agree, goldfish shouldn't be given away as prizes, at Fairs or anywhere else.

Yeah. It’s not just fish. There’s a lot of pets that screw up things. Like alligators in sewers.

Dreadful people do this with their Goldfish and like their common carp relatives - they feed at the bottom of lakes, where they uproot plants and stir up sediment, which then damages the water quality and can lead to algal blooms that harm other species.
