The eggshell serves as a calcium supply for the growing embryo. As the embryo matures, the shell slowly becomes thinner and the hatchling has an easier time breaking through. Did not know this.

I knew some of them. American Robin's eggs are easy to tell apart. If an egg is bigger than all the others, it would be a cowbird. They are parasitic.
