Great article, and good tips to know. I unplug little things like toaster, toaster oven and coffee pot...and I use power strips, which helps.

Computers and gaming devices are two devices that take up most of the electricity and it is not always easy, I must say when one use them most of the time. The electric pressing iron is another appliance that can take up most of the loads at home.

I do unplug the little things, but things like cable boxes you can't unplug as it take too long for them to power back up. But yeah, unplugging all the little stuff can add up rather fast if you don't mind plugging things in and out often.

This is a well known for me since I work for basic electronics and inside every system the transformer runs continously even the power switch off. The best is to make off the switch from socket so it can stop electricity.

You need to shut them down properly. I do that most of the time.

The only thing I keep on standby is my Sky TV box, everything else gets completely turned off.

The only appliances I unplug after using are my coffee maker, toaster and kettle and whatever small appliance I might need throughout the week. I do not unplug my tv or computer. They do get turned off at night but I suppose it wouldn't be hard to unplug them as everything is attached to a surge protected power bar.

They do get turned off at night but I suppose it wouldn't be hard to unplug them as everything is attached to a surge protected power bar. After working in electronics for 20 years in the Navy I can categorically tell you that it's far better for your computer to leave it on. It will last longer because the microchips inside are not getting that constant tiny surge of power every time you power it on, surge protector or not. The only time I will shutdown mine and unplug it is if there is a severe thunderstorm going on.

Was talking to a co-worker recently, he recently got himself an acura car and apparently the battery went dead on it out of the blue. Guess on a long series of that car the Bluetooth player tends to keep draining power even after shutting off the car, bad defect.

Similar problem with my Ford F-150 ... it doesn't get driven a lot and the always on electronics in it drain the battery.

The only time I will shutdown mine and unplug it is if there is a severe thunderstorm going on. I leave mine on because it's just easier but I do shut it down for the updates. Now you are talking about enlisting standby mode, sleep mode, hibernate mode, right? My computer is on but does hibernate & then I move my mouse to "wake" it up. Was talking to a co-worker recently, he recently got himself an acura car and apparently the battery went dead on it out of the blue. I have a 2013 Chrysler 200 Touring; had for a year & half. I don't drive hardly but it's used as a backup if my husband needs a vehicle. We have found if we don't start it at least once a month, the battery is drained. Just this weekend my husband tried jumping it with his van but it didn't take. He had to do the portable charger. I don't know if it has a Bluetooth but I do know there are A LOT of electronics in it. I had looked & saw that many others complained about this car's battery draining but couldn't find WHY. Could that be why the battery drains a lot?

If you have the original battery in there, that's the first problem. They're only good for around 5 years, give or take.
If not, then the next problem is how often you start it and how long you let it run. Just starting it for a few minutes doesn't do anything.
It really needs to be started and driven at least once a week, more if you can manage it. If you have an open stretch of road nearby with no cops, start it, let it warm up for about 10 minutes or so, then drive the heck out of it for 20 minutes or more. The greater the load on the motor, the greater the load on the charging system.
I'm not familiar with your specific vehicle so it could be that it just has a built in problem.
I'm thinking another option would be to disconnect the battery and reconnect it when you need it but I've never tried this so I don't know how solid the logic is behind it.

They drain electricity like their lives depends on it lol.

Steve, I talked to my husband & he said: Not sure if it's the original battery. It's fine unless we let it sit for a month or more. Bought it used 2 years ago. The worst thing about the battery on the Chrysler 200 is that you have to take the driver side front tire off, and the wheel well cover, to get to the battery. Thanks design engineers, such a brilliant idea for the average car owner. We try to take it out every couple weeks to keep the battery charged.

You need to shut them down properly. I do that most of the time. If possible, doing it at the control system is very important. You need to shut it down to avoid making mistakes at the end of the day which can even result to fire outbreaks.

I've got a few old arcade machines which probably use up a fair bit of electricity but I don't use them for long.

It is good to know that you have years battery running, but here a battery lasts only for years and after one year it starts decreasing slowly the capacity. Ive had laptop battery which came decent time for years, but from the local market the batteries are almost fake and they come for a year only and even they don't have warranty.

Television, printers and computers drain electricity more than the usual. It's why when they are not in use, you should unplug them from the socket. Using your remote to turn off the TV doesn't stop it from consuming electricity.

Using electric kettle is one of those appliances that also drain electricity. So, it is important to find a balance in doing all that needs to be done to save electricity.
