www.familyhandyman.com/article/meaning-of-q-in-qtips "Q-tips are everywhere. You can find them in bathrooms, in doctor's office, and in episodes of CSI. But what exactly does the name mean?... Q-tips, those hygienic products that you can use for everything from “gently applying ointments and creams,” to “clean[ing] and dust [ing] even hard to reach places,” are staples of doctor’s offices and medicine cabinets the whole world over. It’s no mystery that people often ignore the company’s warnings and use them as implements of ear-cleaning, but you know what is a mystery? What in the heck the Q means. It’s probably one of the little things you’ve always wondered about...." My notes: Stands for Quality. & ironically, even though "everybody" uses Q-tips for cleaning IN their ears, it is never recommended to do that.

Yep, people are taking a serious risk of eardrum damage when they use them improperly.

Q for quality. That's dumb! I don't put them in my ears.

I should have some for cleaning reasons, but I never use them for my ear or anything else. We used to have a large box, though I think it got lost in a move.

Great ideas! I've used them to clean small areas i.e. around a faucet or on figurines.

I always tell my spouse that Q-Tips aren't meant for cleaning your ears but they don't listen to me... I get paranoid when they want to clean my ears with q-tips because I'm afraid part of it will get stuck in my ear canal. This happened to one of my uncles before, he tried cleaning his ears and the q-tip broke in his ear so he had to go to the er to get it removed. :S
