www.barkandwhiskers.com/cats-playing-or-fighting Story at-a-glance A recently published study sheds some much-needed light on cat-cat interactions, specifically play behavior that has the potential to escalate to fighting The researchers used several tools to collect and categorize feline behaviors into six categories, including wrestling, chasing, and vocalizing Next, they separated their observations of 210 cats into three groups of interaction types: playful, agonistic (aggressive), and intermediate (a blend of the first two) Results showed that most (56%) of the cats fell into the playful group, with 29% falling into the agonistic group, and the remaining 15% in the intermediate group Important takeaways from the study: A pair of wrestling cats are likely playing; cats who are vocalizing and chasing each other are probably fighting; vocalizing, chasing, resting cats may be sizing up the situation and deciding whether to continue, or stop My notes: Our two cats play fight every night. It can look quite fearsome but I do know they are just playing. Because afterwards, they lick each other & cuddle.

Yeah, it's hard to tell the difference sometimes. If they are fighting, there's more noise and tension.

Yeah, it's hard to tell the difference sometimes. If they are fighting, there's more noise and tension. A person has to elevate cats for long period to differenciate and this could be known by experience.

We had two cats that would be vicious with each other and then would make up. Was it really playing at the start? Who knows. Cats are extreme!

My cats playfight all the time and it's fairly easy to know if they're actually fighting or just playing, if they were, they would be hissing, raising their back and scratching.

Yeah, it's hard to tell the difference sometimes. If they are fighting, there's more noise and tension. They start by playing but it turns out to fighting and then real combat between two cats as they are not playing.
