www.birdsandblooms.com/gardening/gardening-basics/garden-myths"Gardeners all have tips but some are just wrong. Weed out the myths on how to ripen green tomatoes, what to plant near black walnut trees and more...." My notes: What myths have you believed? Did they still work? For me, I ripen tomatoes in a brown paper bag. I've used cardboard as a weed barrier but mainly to kill off the weeds & then I peeled the layers away & composted the rest. Included: Myth: To Ripen Green Tomatoes, Set Them on a Sunny Windowsill Myth: Compost Bins and Piles Smell Awful Myth: You Can’t Plant Anything Near a Black Walnut Tree Myth: Newspaper and Cardboard Are Superb Weed Barriers Myth: You Should Paint Tree Wounds After Pruning Myth: For the Best Garden Soil, Be Sure to Cultivate Regularly Myth: Pepper Plants Aren’t Producing Because the Soil is Too Rich Myth: Wood Chips Make the Best Mulch Myth: Leaving Grass Clippings in Place Will Cause Lawn Thatch to Build Up Myth: You Need to Water Plants Daily

Well I'm enduring one of the myths right now, watering my plants daily. So hot of late and no rain, if I don't they will die and some have due to not able to endure the heat also if the pepper plants don't produce, then there isn't enough calcium in the ground.

Great article! And, I agree with ZandraJoi, I ripen tomatoes with brown paper bags. I've used newspaper before, but the ink is not the best thing for them. I don't water anything everyday...usually every 4-5 days works for me. And, it's good for plants, etc to lightly mist the top foliage & flowers, too.

The brown paper bag trick can work with most fruits and veggies, as I know it can be done with cantaloupe if not wipe if bought, works well with most melons really.

demonskeith, lainee, I water every other day but I focus to deep water. Even though we aren't getting rain, it has been cooler at night which helps the plants hold the moisture. I never tried the brown paper bag with melons. I'll have to remember that
