www.familyhandyman.com/article/heres-how-to-keep-a-cat-from-scratching-the-furniture"Scratching is a normal aspect of cat behavior. In the wild, cats scratch their claws to remove the dead layer of claw (think of it like a cat manicure), which helps to keep their claws sharp for hunting. Scratching also lets them mark their territory. They have scent glands between their claws and the scratch marks themselves are a visual sign to other cats that this area is occupied. Scratching and stretching also help them to keep their bodies in good shape...." My notes: Do you have this issue with your cats? What do you do to prevent them from scratching up your furniture? We have scratching posts but because our cats are in & out to a fenced yard, they are used to wood. So what we did was get a big log & they prefer that over anything else.

Yeah, get a scratching post. Or make one yourself. They are easy to make.

lol, I was at a buddy's place last night and even though he has all these toys and scratches posts around, the cats still went at his chair for a moment, a quick call of their name in a warning tone made the cat hurry over to the post.

When we had Smokey, she would always scratch the furniture if she thought you were not watching but she would always get caught and we used to tell her off about it. We ended up getting a scratching post for her and after a while of telling her off when she scratched the furniture and moving her to the scratch posts she started going for that more.
We still had times where she would attempt to scratch the furniture but when she knew you had caught her she would turn around and use her scratch post LOL

Sounds like your cat is a sneaky one that hates getting caught. Must be a fun one to have around.

Bob, demonskeith, shortie, elseb, Scratching posts are always ideal but why don't the cats like them as much? lol Any of your cats scratch the walls? Our one does & especially around the corners of doorways.

Do have scratching posts but to prevent scratching on furniture I buy this spray which works really well and doesn't harm the furniture.

I've seen those advertised but never tried them as I wasn't sure how effective they would be. Do you have a brand name? The one I was looking into was Nature's Miracle.
