www.familyhandyman.com/list/hidden-expenses-pet-ownership "Whether you’re looking to adopt a dog, cat, rabbit, hamster — you get the idea — it’s important to make a list of pros and cons and really consider the decision. The pros are obvious: seemingly unconditional love, a companion to come home to, and a friend to play with...." My notes: What have you come across as an added expense that you weren't prepared for? Some are not applicable for us. i.e. we've owned our own home so didn't have to worry about an added fee.

Oh yeah, it can get expensive. Some get pet insurance to help cover the costs. Organic food, toys, vitamins all add up to an expense.

Special food for pets with allergies was something unexpected for me when our cat was alive. We also had to pay a pet license fee to the town. It was small, but still it added up with all the little things I didn't expect.

Added expenses would be vet bills for when your animal gets sick and you need to medication or special food for them.

It's cheaper than having a human kid, unless you're one of these people that go all out and then it gets crazy expensive. One reason I don't have any pets at the moment.
