Do you think there are those who don’t know how to read? The older generation, most didn't learn to read well as they had to quit school. I know of men & women in their 80's & 90's who don't read too well. So I can understand that. Nowadays, kids text & use acronyms & odd spellings so don't learn proper grammar as well as reading & writing skills. Even with texting, people don’t have to “read” per se, as memorize acronyms. Heck, there are so many emojis that people don’t even need to write LOL they just need to put in the laughing emoji.

I thought it was pretty much a universal skill now, at least in the developed world? Perhaps 100 years ago, there would still have been a significant number of people who couldn't read and write, but not now!
(In the developing world, it's a different story: there are still countries where a fairly large portion of the population can't read and write. But even there, it seems to be improving quite rapidly!)

Absolutely! I work with idiots everyday who don't read or have a hard time. I think illiteracy is few and far between, even in my generation. I think the younger generation can read but have a lot of trouble reading. They know how to read just not spell and I doubt many can write very well because they are alwys typing abbreviated things.

I lay a lot of blame on the schools when they advance students even if they haven't conquered a particular subject and reading is so important. I like the way they do it in high schools. If you fail one course you still advance to the next level but stay behind in that course. They should do that in grade school as well. Maybe we wouldn't have so many frustrated children dropping out of school.
