Here in Michigan, they now have it against the law to be on your phone while driving. It’s common sense & it’s so sad we need a LAW to pay attention to the road!
“Go hands-free. Just drive. It’s the law. It is now illegal to manually use a cell phone or other mobile electronic device while operating a vehicle on Michigan roads. Under the law, a driver cannot hold or support a phone or other device with any part of their hands, arms, or shoulders. Even if a cell phone or other device is mounted on your dashboard or connected to your vehicle’s built-in system, you cannot use your hands to operate it beyond a single touch.”
Do you think cell phones should be banned while driving? Does your state now have a law? I wonder if they have like an EMF that would disable phones but not affect the vehicle’s computer.

Yes, they should be banned while driving...also no texting. If it's really important, stop and pull over somewhere

What about cars that come with mini tvs and touch screens? Those are just as distracting at times if you ask me lol.

lainee, demonskeith, Thank you both for your replies! Michigan states: "use a cell phone or other mobile electronic device" so I am guessing that includes the mini tvs & touch screens. The passenger can do it but not the driver. But even if the driver isn't touching, if they are watching, it's just as bad.
Same with tuning the radio or popping in a different CD.

Yeah, it's banned here. Should've been a long time ago.

I think all states should have this ban. Even with the ban in states that have it, I see young people with their phones on the steering wheel trying to text as they drive...sometimes at 50MPH. It's so scary.

AFAIK, every American vehicle has to have the dashboard screen disable itself while the car is driving. As for handheld phones, yes, they should be banned why the vehicle is moving. My truck connects to my phone so I can answer calls (and hang up) with the press of a button on the steering wheel so I never have to take my eyes off the road.

It's so scary. I'd love to see the driving age be bumped higher! 16 year olds are just not mature enough. Granted, some can be but the majority, no. I didn't know that about the dashboard screen. Our vehicles don't have the tech like that.

When my daughter was 15 and got her learner's permit, I thought, but she's just a baby!! If they raise the age for drivers then they have to raise the age for being able to work too and that's a struggle for some families. There are kids who start making some money at the age of 14...like at Dairy Queen. Once they can start driving themselves to work and back, it makes it easier on moms and dads.

That is a dilemma there! Maybe a compromise could be proof of a good work record THEN they could get a driver's license.
Too bad we can't alter the laws out there lol
