Short for Fan Fiction or FanFiction. For more info: FanFic“Fan fiction or fanfiction (also abbreviated to fan fic, fanfic, fic or FF) is fictional writing written in an amateur capacity by fans, unauthorized by, but based on an existing work of fiction. The author uses copyrighted characters, settings, or other intellectual properties from the original creator(s) as a basis for their writing. Fan fiction ranges from a couple of sentences to an entire novel, and fans can retain the creator's characters and settings and/or add their own. It is a form of fan labor. Fan fiction can be based on any fictional (and occasional non-fictional) subject. Common bases for fan fiction include novels, movies, comics, musical groups, cartoons, anime, manga, and video games.” Have you ever wrote one? Was it short or long? What was it about? Do you care to share an excerpt or two? While I love to write, fanfic is not for me.

I've written a LOT of fan-fictions. I'm in the process of redoing all of my written work (they were in a bunch of notebooks), but then got lost in a move. I mostly write about my favorite character, Fate Testarossa from the anime Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha. This anime portrays two girls (the protagonist, Nanoha), and the antagonist (Fate) starting at nine years old, but through the many series these two girls age (about 25 years old now). My fan-fictions take place during the gaps between the official shows and take fragments of plots and plot devices to see how the characters would respond to various situations. Since Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha is a nice blend of Magical Girl and Sci-Fi, I am able to let my imagination run wild within this setting and the characters. That's actually part of the challenge of writing Fan-Fiction: Is to keep the characters as much In Character as possible. So, it's not nearly as free as writing something that I would have completely made up in my own novel. But at the same time, it's easier, because there's already a fan base of readers who eagerly await new chapters to be written staring their favorite characters. And many of these fans will critique my work, so that makes me become a better writer as well. Typically, I shoot for about 20 written pages (that's about six typed pages -- because my handwriting is huge and loopy) for each chapter, and many of my stories range around 25 chapters. If I had more time to be idle again, I would probably be writing a lot more than I currently do. If I could write at my workplace (there's a lot of standing idle time), yet I wouldn't be able to sit and concentrate on my imagination because I'm always on standby. Oh well. Maybe one day I'll have more time to myself again.
I also write cross-over fan fiction. So I'll take a character or two characters from different shows and put them into a different setting altogether. I did this with Fate and Skuld (from Ah! My Goddess), and threw them into the world of Tenchi Universe with all that chaos. It turned out to be a hilarious comedy that had the plot of a hint of romance, and all the just in time heroism. That one story turned out to be over 650 written pages.

Senkusha, Thank you so much for sharing! I've read some fanfics, not on anime, but on cancelled TV series from fans who wanted the story to have an ending. Many people came up with such good material, I always wondered why the main writers never used them! Have you ever shared yours with the original writers?

Most of the Fan-fiction that I write ends up on my site, or Fanfiction.net. And because most of the original creators of the shows that I "borrow" are Japanese, living in Japan, I highly doubt that they even know I exist. I do however, always insert a preamble, a disclaimer stating that the works I've used are not my own, I do not intend to receive any compensation and I give gratitude to whomever (by name) the original creators are/were.
