Is there a certain age kids should get one? Or how about NOT getting one? Take a step back & bar the fact that “everybody” has one, should they though? Even though I don’t have kids & that “everybody” has a cell, I would only get it & have 911 programmed into it as well as pertinent phone numbers such as Mom, Dad, Grandparents, trusted family friend for emergencies. I don’t feel kids should have free rein & access to the internet at all hours of the day. It’s just like how parents should monitor computer & before that, TV screen time.

Tough call these days. My neighbor's grandkids (both under 6) know more about how to use a cellphone than I do. I guess it depends on the parents to teach them responsibility when using one.

Depends on their lifestyle, if they are in a lot of after school activities, I would get them a simple flip phone, I wouldn't let them have a high-end smartphone till they were older near graduation age.

It is always a tough call and I do not judge parents for which way they go as there are valid points for both sides.
However, I do support allowing kids who are responsible enough to take care of a phone to have a phone. Technology is almost on par with spoken language for most activities and even jobs today, careers that you would have never dreamed of having tech are now carrying laptops and diagnostic tools. The social aspect of technology is also a learning curve, that like in person social activity needs to be taught over years. So to me, it always feels like kids are getting a late start to a very valuable part of their lives if denied phones for too long.
There is also the bonuses to phones, yes they have bad sides, but there a plenty of parenting tools out there to nurture kids to properly use the mini computer that has all the answers to every question on it and includes knowledge from every book ever written.
I think the best way to see this in person is watching teenagers use their phone to watch diy videos to fix a problem or lookup the answer to a question no one in the room knows in seconds while a grandparent sits on Facebook looking at memes complaining that the kid got a phone too early.
