www.familyhandyman.com/article/safe-room"Safe rooms protect you and your family against severe weather and home invasions, but do you need one? Growing up in Oklahoma, I experienced a lot of tornadoes. Everyone in the state knew the drill, repeated hundreds of times by television meteorologists: Get to the lowest part of your house; stay away from windows. If you think the lowest part of the house is the basement, well…not in Oklahoma. Most people don’t have them. I spent many a night crouching in the bathtub under a mattress. Safe rooms sound like a better way to spend an evening, right? Have you thought about installing one? (I sure wish we had one when I was growing up!) Here’s what you need to know...." My notes: Would you have a safe room? I think they can be quite beneficial, however not feasible for many. They can cost a lot of money. Money that people are lacking.

The basement would most likely be our choice. I have a bag filled with essentials, but not fully prepared yet. We need to make sure we have enough supplies and, to have a plan ready

If I live in a hot area of either bad weather or just not a safe area to live, I would dedicate one room for increased security. Common sense to do so really.

For tornadoes, we go into the basement.
At our first house, we had a crawl space underneath one of the bedrooms...and only in that area, that was accessible from the garage. It wasn't like a normal crawl space I'd ever seen, because you could crouch inside of it without crawling. I had a plan that if someone invaded our home, that's the place I would hide out in because it wasn't an obvious spot.

Granted, any area can have dangers and doesn't hurt to have something, but sometimes you got to roll the odds.

I wouldn't mind having a bunker.

There really isn't a functional reason to be against having safe rooms in homes as many areas are going to be exposed to natural disasters at one point or another. Then you have terror and war based disasters and smaller issues like fires and home invasions. Basically everyone has a use for needing a staff room.... But.... They are not cheap. The vast majority people will also be perfectly fine not having one, but not fine adding 100k to their home's cost. Then there are the problems of people misusing them. How many will turn them into storage rooms or even modify the structure to suite their needs.

It's definitely something one needs to customize based on their own needs, financial situation, etc.
It'd be nice having a bunker. But just like a storm cellar where you have to get to outside the home, I rather have something that is accessible from within.

I got confused per that article that says they were the same thing! But I can now see Panic Room vs Safe Room. May also be what people put in it as well.
