What are your traditions for Christmas? Some people start with Thanksgiving, putting up the tree, the decorations, etc. We don’t do gifts anymore nor a tree. I do put up the decorations around this time of year. Ornaments & figurines. The thing about tradition is sometimes we do them even when we don’t have the heart for them anymore. We just shrug & explain “It’s tradition.” But traditions have to start somewhere & there’s no rule you can’t make a new one.

We (meaning my wife) put up some decorations inside and out but that's about it. No special meal or anything.

We go to midnight mass in church together as a family and put decorations around and about. I cook turkey and stuffing for dinner etc. I bake a Christmas cake too.

That must be an American thing putting up the tree and decorations at Thanksgiving. When I was little being of German descent we always had an Advent Calendar so beginning Dec 1 we would open a door until December 24th. Germans don't celebrate December 25th. Our gifts were opened December 24th and we also looked forward to Nikolaustag on December 6th, where we get a small treat.

If you travel around on the day after Thanksgiving, you'll see many people with trees on their hoods.
What is Nikolaustag?
