Since we’ve had Tech for many years now & kids nowadays are growing up with it, what do you think are the long-term side effects? I feel bullying has increased drastically. It’s easy to bully, berate, demean when you are anonymous. I also feel people forget how to actually be around actual human beings! We’re used to doing emojis & acronyms.

Interesting you mentioned bullying. Just yesterday a young kid was bullied playing an online game ... the bully convinced the kid to take his own life, which he did.
I read about events like this all the time and like you said, bullying has increased drastically.
Another side effect of tech is dependency. Kids now don't know how to go off the grid ...

ZandraJoi, Steve, Bullies have always been around, and with tech it's even easier for them to get away with terrible acts. They're anonymous, and not afraid of getting caught! (Gee, that should change, huh?!) The Government knows everything and they sure know how to dox people! Yeah, bullies...they're so tough!! More like "gutless cowards"!

I agree with both points. It's easy to bully when you don't see the person. Now anybody can be a bully.
Many don't know how to unplug.

You got to be willing to endure a little harassment, yes it is easier to bully online but at the same time to shrug it off since no physical harm is being done. I've seen bullying get pretty physical back in my school days.

We've all known bullies, and sometimes, shrugging off is 'doable'...until someone, like a sensitive kid, is talked into hurting themselves or, worse, suicide.

Got to know the person and know when they need to be monitored while on the net or make it so they don't even get access to stuff that might hurt them.

demonskeith, lainee, Mental & emotional harm can be just as bad. I think it's worse online because I feel it's harder to stop. I think cyberbullying is worse because it's invisible. When you are bullied at school, there are witnesses, even if they turn their heads. Online, they do the damage & are then gone. & instead of being just your schoolmates, it could be ANYBODY from around the world. That's scary!

Yeah, and, because they're online, they feel invincible, cause it's hard to stop them...and they know it!
They do their worst and disappear. And, yeah...you're right, it isn't just at school...it's all over, worldwide. Very scary!

This is all the more reason why children should NOT have unsupervised access to the Internet. An adult, somebody whom has learned the coping skills necessary to deal with bullies could have intervened, and saved that child's life. Personally, I see as technology increases in people lives, I also see a correlating decline in social skills in people's lives. I see all over social media about how kids are more rude than ever, they don't have the discipline to even enjoy a dinner out without the iPad distracting them [quelling, pacifying, <insert appropriate term here>]. I even read something somewhere this morning that the dating scene is suffering. People in in their 20s aren't dating anymore (probably because of a lack of financial resources). And kids aren't dating -- unless they're in middle school apparently. But the kids aren't talking to one another in person, they're all on their phones. I think that as technology is making the world smaller, it's also having the effect of making the world incredibly larger at the same time. I totally get that people are more comfortable chatting online, I mean, it's comfy. You don't have to get dressed "up" to go out. You don't have to worry about awkward social situations -- you can just ghost somebody (run away). You can even pick your nose if it itches, and nobody would be the wiser. Anyway, I think that, yes, technology is probably here to stay, and will become increasingly more prevalent in our lives. Personally, I think our entire education system needs to be scrapped and rebuilt. Instead of filling children with "testables" that most of them probably won't use, unless they choose a specialized career field, I think schools need to teach usable skills. Being social, having Internet "street knowledge", how to create and work a budget, you know, real skills that adults use (cooking!!!!!!) That's what I think schools should focus on. I mean, after all, we all know that once AGI (Artificial General Intelligence) is created, we won't really need to know Pythagoras's Theorem , AI will just use it. In fact, I think AI will eventually replace our corrupted Governments, and we may actually get peace on Earth -- or is it desolation? Technology used correctly can be a good thing, however I think that a lot of people, myself included, have used it more as a crutch. I mean, what happens if the power were to go out, like long term? The tech will stop working, then what? Nobody really knows basic survival skills anymore. It's a lot of work, work that people "don't have time for". As I've been getting older, I've realized some of the joy of slowing down. I've researched how to preserve food, I've learned about dehydration, and a little bit about canning. I know how to start a fire with only the extreme basics. I've been learning more about herbology, and uses for nature's cornucopia of plants, and it's fun!

Thank you for your reply lainee I agree with you Senkusha! I don’t believe they should have phones either unless it’s JUST for 911 & family phone numbers. People don’t know how to socialize anymore. They don’t know how to talk; they just know how to text. I had wished that when I was in school as well. Real world skills. We had to take i.e. Algebra but outside of that year, I have NEVER used it since. I don’t even remember it lol That’s why I unplug often. While I would miss the ‘net, I “can” do things without WiFi. I have physical books & music to listen to. Books, I don’t even need electricity to utilize them! I am into Prepping & have physical books I can refer to.

I was at the mall about a year ago eating in the Food Court, and there was a group of high school girls sitting not far from me. I'd hear them giggle every now and then, and I'd look up, and see that they're not whispering gossip to each other, they're texting back and forth to EACH OTHER!
Another note, I wish I could find it, but I saw on TikTok a parent (I'm guessing a kid's father?) was getting frustrated with their child being loud and rambunctious. He gave the kid an iPhone with an animated cartoon on it, and the kid became an instant Zombie. Quiet, focused on the screen, and was sitting completely still! I glanced up from my TikTok, (yeah, I'm guilty), and noticed that most everyone on the subway had their head buried in their phone! Nobody was talking to anybody. This, is the Zombie Apocalypse! No wonder why people are having such a hard time being social and making friends, and being lonely. It's the darn tech that's isolating everybody, distracting everybody even!
I totally get your point on Algebra though. I've only used it when I was writing computer programs. I've only used Trig a couple of times, once for building a wheelchair ramp for my ex brother in law, and once when I was trying to draw a character proportionally, I needed the square root function, and my calculator didn't have that function.

Senkusha, I think it should start at home. At the dinner table, all people present should BE present. No tech should be allowed. There also should be Family Night. We have lost Family. If we bring that back, I feel people would be able to socialize better. I'm going to continue this in the Spirituality Board. So members are welcome to continue the discussion there as I feel it's less about tech & MORE about us as Human BEings. Added: Join us here & continue the conversation: Tech side effects on humanity
