What do you think of Social Media platforms demanding a membership & charging a fee now? Do you think it’s better all around or do you think people would stop using those platforms? I am not one to pay for something online. I don’t like my personal info out there anymore than it has to be. Now, if I could move out of Proboards, I’d be willing to pay for another forum platform but that would be something I’d use. Social Media can be okay, but I won’t pay for it. I think those who have had accounts for awhile would pay to keep those accounts intact. One thing about Facebook is that many tend to use it to keep in touch with family & friends.

if I could move out of Proboards, I’d be willing to pay for another forum platform but that would be something I’d use I could make that happen where I'm hosted for free but you'd lose your entire content because of Proboards terms and conditions. Anything having to do with anything on your forum becomes their property. And I'd never pay for a Social Media platform. Hell, I don't even use any of them even though they're free.

Proboards doesn't offer you a pay method to get your data off? Thought they did, otherwise there may be other ways, but it's been a long while since anyone moved from proboards.
I don't tend to pay much, since most is related to content I can get for free.

There are definitely alternatives to ProBoards. SMF, what I use is totally free, all I pay for is yearly hosting (First year on the Mid-level tier is only $30 (for the first year). After that, I think it goes up to like $150/yr or something (that includes my domain name re-registration, I think).) Or you could go the route of hosting yourself, but that's another hobby in and of itself. While you're saving money on hosting fees, you're paying a monthly fee for the internet connection, and you'd have to be concerned with power outages and securing your own server (firewall). It can be a challenging but fun hobby. I don't do it anymore because I've moved away from I.T. as a career. (Not that being a cashier/warehouse worker is much of a career anyway.)
As for paying for Social Media. Heck (censored) NO! I'd rather start my own social media network (and I'm sure AI can probably create something to start with, without too much hassle). And, if I DID have to pay for Social Media, I would demand absolutely NO ADVERTISING of any kind! These stupid corporations make too much money as it is now anyway!

I don't use Social Media too much myself.

I don't tend to pay much, since most is related to content I can get for free. When I searched, they had a way many years ago but had stopped it. They do have a sister platform you pay for where the content could be moved, however, you need to start from there.
When I first started HOST, my goal was to move over if it was successful. When I was ready & looking for the option, I found out PB is the ONLY platform that makes you stay. There's others that would move out if they didn't have to start over.

I chose PB as I had a forum over 15 years ago & while they are easy to use for beginners, the changing of hands has it not like it used to be.
I have no problem with people swearing lol Hell NO!

I lowkey kind of wish these social media platforms did make their users pay for their service, because then there would be less people using social media and more people using forums again lol. It sucks that you can't move off the Proboards platform if you really wanted to, some free forum hosts do allow this and I think Proboards did allow you to upgrade to their paid service, Forums.net and you could move off the platform but they don't offer this anymore.

I feel like most users would keep using them as paying a few dollars for subscriptions has become a norm. It still amazes me when trying to explain how having ten $10 subscriptions a months is costing a person a lot of money and people just don't seem to look past the "it's just $10".

So do I but I figure we are all adults & sometimes Gosh Golly Gee doesn't have the same oomph I lowkey kind of wish these social media platforms did make their users pay for their service, because then there would be less people using social media and more people using forums again lol. Oh you have a good point lol People may just wander over to forums instead!
I had searched & even asked. PB is the only one where they don't allow it for their reasons that don't make sense. They do have the sister site, but you have to start there first.

Same with the upgrades for Streaming Services. Each is $5, which in itself isn't much, but then they have several of them on top of paying for their cable or satellite. It just adds up! There's so much talk going on about upping prices all over.

Senkusha - since you're using SMF, if you want hosting for free, let me know.

Senkusha - since you're using SMF, if you want hosting for free, let me know. That's sweet! How easy is it to host your own? I don't pay for hosting and wouldn't. Nor would I pay for social media. With prices skyrocketing, you'd think many others wouldn't either!

ZandraJoi, It's not really that hard to host your own server. Most people who do self-hosting do it using a LAMP server (Linux, Apache, MySql, PHP). There's a little bit of a learning curve, but there are packages that have been built that basically, you install it and answer a few questions, and you're ready to go. The major thing you'll need though is something called a Static IP (some cable companies call it a Sticky IP), and it usually costs about an extra $20 per month. Although, there are services now like DynamicDNS, that you don't have to have the (non-changing) static IP address. It was a bit of fun and I got to flex my geek muscle a bit, but now I'd rather not deal with keeping it secure and dealing with What If's (like power outages) and having all that anxiety. Even if my web-hosting was just for my own anime website, and wasn't mission critical, I was ALWAYS thinking about it. That and you have to keep the computer on all the time. Then again, you can also get a Raspberry Pi and run the server on that, but it wouldn't keep up with intense traffic hitting your site. There I go, flexing my geek muscle again. LOL

LOL I've talked to several people on various forums who self-host & even do it for others. I never understood HOW. So I thank you for this explanation. I guess I'd be concerned with hosting for others & something happens & I'm at fault & their site is down.
