What do you think of cover bands? Per Wiki: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cover_band "A cover band (or covers band) is a band that plays songs recorded by someone else, sometimes mimicking the original as accurately as possible, and sometimes re-interpreting or changing the original. These remade songs are known as cover songs. New or unknown bands often find the format marketable for smaller venues, such as pubs, clubs or parks. The bands also perform at private events, for example, weddings and birthday parties, and may be known as a wedding band, party band, function band or band-for-hire. A band whose covers consist mainly of songs that were chart hits is often called a top 40 band. Some bands, however, start as cover bands, then grow to perform original material. For example, the Rolling Stones released three albums consisting primarily of covers and then recorded one with their own original material...." Do you think it's a bit cheating? Or as long as they sing & play good, it doesn't matter it's not their original songs? I know of many people who sing songs from other artists but not as their "job". I guess I'd prefer them to come up with original ones.

I've never given it much thought. Did not know that about the Rolling Stones, but then Mick Jagger can't carry a tune in a bucket and I thought the same about several other British bands and other musicians.

Being in a cover band is a way to grow popularity. People don't give a crap about a no name band generally. So you see this band play all the hits. The band gets more gigs at bars. Eventually, they mix in an original. If people react well, maybe they mix in a 2nd. Then they make an album and try and sell it at their shows. I think this a way to get a start in the industry to try and gain popularity.

I used to be in a pretty good one in the 80's. It was fun at the time. When I got a bit older though I prefered to be in original bands who wrote our own music.

Sometimes you just want to hear the song being done, so long as the people playing it can do it justice.

Do you still associate with your old bandmates? Sometimes you just want to hear the song being done, so long as the people playing it can do it justice. For some, the new version can actually sound better.
