I'm really trying to get my head back into the game of writing, battling depression really sucks. Anyway, for the longest time, I wrote using just a regular pad of notepaper and a pen. However, I have this nice "office" setup at home with a comfy chair, proper ergonomics, and a nice [Windows] computer system. I'd like to expand my writing by using tools that are designed to help authors be more productive, as I don't have a whole lot of time available.
I'm looking for writing applications, things that are helpful for character design, organizing plots. Writing applications that have features for formatting the page for novels, word and (possibly character) counting, grammar and spell check. Also, if there are any applications that help with my major flaws of mixing time tenses, using an "active" voice rather than a "passive voice" (using phrases such as I thought, she felt, they smelled, he saw), and simple text formatting options that are industry standard.
Although my computer is Windows 11 Pro, I also use an Android smart phone so that's an option too, but I really don't think I'll be using it to write with.
I've thought of using Microsoft Word, but I don't need that set and range of features. Not to mention that I don't want to be constantly nagged to pay for Office 365 at $7.50/month. I don't need cloud storage either. In fact, I'd love to stay away from anything that requires a monthly subscription fee (which sadly, it seems to be the current Capitalistic business model).
Does anybody have any recommendations to help a writer who's coming back to the hobby?

I just use pen & paper or start in Word. Since my writings are for my own eyes, I'm not too picky on the grammar & other flaws I know I can have with writing lol It's therapeutic more than anything.
I pay for Word 365 yearly. I liked the old Word when you just could buy once & forget about it.
For apps, the only one I know of is Grammarly. I've also seen WordTune. But those are more for writing a letter or memo than a book with characters.
