www.familyhandyman.com/article/gravel-flower-bed-tips"Thinking of making the switch from mulch to pea gravel in your flower beds? I transitioned almost all of mine a few years ago and have never looked back. I mulch a few beds in the front of my house, but the rest is pea gravel and I am so happy with the decision. To determine if pea gravel is the right choice for your yard, I spoke with two experts about the pros and cons of pea gravel, as well as installation and maintenance tips...." My notes: Who has used pea gravel? What did you like best about it? I've used mulch & we had stones at our last house but I didn't find them to be that good at preventing weeds. It's hard to weed out a root when you have to dig through literal gravel!

I've used similar rock, or rather, that was in the bed I got when I moved in. It's a good covering, won't go anywhere but on really hot days I think it hurts the plants by holding in the hot sun heat.

Maybe it's better in areas that don't get full sun?
