This song was playing not too long ago by the Village People. Have any of you been to a YMCA or YWCA? Do you have them in your area? We may have had one in the city but it wasn’t something I cared to go to.
Per a search: “Founded in London in 1844, the Y has grown into one of the largest organizations focused on strengthening communities in the U.S. and around the world, serving more than 64 million people in 120 countries.”
& per another search: “Why did YMCA change its name? It's official—the YMCA is now just called the Y. The YMCA of the USA announced its new brand strategy in an effort to modernize its image and draw attention to its core areas of focus, Y officials said today in a press conference.”
Do you still call it the YMCA or the shortened version the Y? I didn’t even realize it had been changed!

Been to a YMCA when I was younger. I know it's helpful for some, but I found out it wasn't for me.
I've called it both...YMCA and the Y

We don't have any around here but I have been to one a few times. That was back when it was still called the YMCA (now I have that freaking song stuck in my head! Thanks a lot ZandraJoi. ). Changing it to just the 'Y' only makes sense. Makes it gender neutral.

There was one later on when I was out of High School. We had the Civic Center, but there was no pool. Only wading pools. I didn't know the name changed.
