Taco shell you fill it in & then eat with your hands. Tortilla chips you dip in. I prefer tortilla chips. You never can fit it all in a taco shell without it breaking & then biting it, it just makes a mess. What I do is put the stuff all in a bowl & crush up my chips & eat with a spoon. Which one do you prefer & how do you like to eat it?

Chips for me as well.
I never understood the concept of a taco. You bite into something that has an opening on the other side of whichever you're biting in?
Life hack - when you're eating tacos, eat them over a taco shell ... by the time you finish you've got enough spillage to make one more taco!

If you use the soft taco shells, you fold in the bottom end before folding it in half, and then nothing falls out. Except, I usually overfill anyway and stuff comes out LOL I like taco shells when I want a taco and sometimes we use flour, sometimes white corn soft shells and sometimes the hard shells, but rarely for those. It's whatever we get a taste to eat.
When I make taco salad, then we use the tortilla chips.

Hard tacos are messy but they do come in some interesting flavours.

We've used corn & white rice to make our own soft shells. The ones in the store have many ingredients including gums which I'm sensitive to.
I have never eat either of them so don't really know. I know some countries may not eat them as readily. Hard tacos are messy but they do come in some interesting flavours. I've seen some of the flavors out there & it's good for those who want an extra kick to their meal.

Done both....I don't mind it in a bowl, but I do like it in a soft taco rather than a hard one

Give me a taco shell, heated for a few minutes and then loaded up! Only issues is getting one that isn't broken. I looked if there's a way to fix them but only option is to put in a bowl. Some make their own with a soft tortilla & fold them over the oven rack to create new shells. Depends what mood I'm in, but I have tortilla chips more frequently . I think they are less messy. & you can eat more or less depending on your appetite at that time. I'll take a soft taco over a traditional one any day. Do you make your own? Done both....I don't mind it in a bowl, but I do like it in a soft taco rather than a hard one Soft holds up better.

Not since Taco Bell moved in just down the street. Ahh! That does it then lol How easy is it to make your own shells? How long does it take? I had to ask my husband as he's the cook lol We bought Masa Harina from Vitacost & he said the recipe is on the back. You can use that recipe for another brand I'm sure. We also get White rice flour but he said he had to find a recipe online. I think it was similar to the corn one. We have a Tortilla Press. He then cooks them with a bit of oil in a pan on the stove or on our flat-top grill.
We have a big ziploc bag cut down the seams he uses for the Press to keep it from sticking to it. We then wash it & save for next time.
That is for soft shells. While we haven't made hard shells, putting them over the oven rack & cooking a bit forms them.
It is quite easy & doesn't take long at all. I like it because there's no added ingredients. Just corn or just white rice.
